Unlike most allergy drugs - which treat only symptoms - sublingual immunotherapy addresses the underlying causes of allergies for people in the Denver, Colorado area. Allergy drops are administered in gradually increasing dosages until the patient develops a tolerance to the allergy-causing substance.
The benefit of sublingual immunotherapy is that a broad range of allergies, including those caused by dust mites, pollen, mold, animals, foods and chemicals can be treated.
Sublingual immunotherapy has been used in various parts of the world for 60-plus years. More than 100 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals prove that sublingual treatment is both safe and effective.
Compared to traditional injection therapy, allergy drop treatment is more convenient, requires fewer clinic visits and costs less. Most importantly allergy drops are a safe, effective treatment for young children, asthmatics, the highly reactive and those with underlying medical conditions that prevent them from being candidates for injection therapy.
Yes! Children from infancy on up can be treated with allergy drops. Because sublingual therapies use carefully measured frequent doses to treat allergic conditions effectively, they are able to treat children early on-enabling them to treat the root cause of the allergy before it develops into other related conditions.
Allergy drop treatment, like allergy shot treatment, works by delivering a slowly increasing dose of FDA approved antigen that, over time, builds the body's tolerance. Drops are placed under the tongue and affect the immune system through very specialized cells found there. Research shows these cells are a friendly and effective route for long-term desensitization, making it an ideal option for patients who can't do shots due to time constraints and/or medical conditions.
Most of our Denver, Colorado patients take allergy drops for three to five years. Allergies are retested periodically and the strength of drops adjusted accordingly.
Compared to shots, allergy drops cost less and require fewer clinic visits. Typical monthly cost of drops is comparable to medication co-pays. Patients using allergy drops can avoid weekly or monthly office visits that typically occur with allergy injections.
The use of allergy drops is relatively new to our office and the local insurance industry, therefore a specific billing/reimbursement code has not yet been established. For this reason, we will not bill your insurance carrier for this service and drops are offered to our patients on a cash basis only.
